Care begins with attention

A calm conversation, a carefully positioned cuff and attention to the person in front of you are all part of learning to care. At AIET, Health Promotion Officer students are putting their learning into practice through supervised vital-sign checks, including blood pressure and blood glucose checks.

Practice with guidance

These practical sessions give learners an opportunity to work with equipment, ask questions and develop confidence under supervision. Each task calls for concentration, respectful communication and care. Students are learning to approach the person as well as the procedure.

Keep a record of your learning

Practical learning continues after a check is complete. Students also work on their logbooks, recording learning activities and progress. The practical session and the written record belong together: both help learners reflect on what they have done and prepare for the next stage of their studies.

See a moment from the session

Watch the short, silent clip below to see a student carrying out a blood pressure check. This is a glimpse of supervised student learning, rather than a guide to carrying out a clinical procedure.

Explore your route into community health

If you are considering HPO study, review the programme entry requirements and ask Admissions about the current intake, practical learning arrangements and assessment requirements. Bring your questions and your school results so that you can discuss the appropriate route.
